I am known to my friends as someone who enjoys the occasional political discussion.  So it is only natural to expect that at some point I will comment on elections at the upcoming synodical convention.  So here it is, for those who were wondering :

Trust not in princes they are but mortal; Earthborn they are and soon decay. Naught are their counsels at life’s last portal, when the dark grave doth claim its prey.  Since then no man can help afford, trust ye in Christ our God and Lord.  Hallelujah! Hallelujah!.

And that’s all I have to say about that.

Tennessee is the next state on the get-rid-of-payday-loans-bandwagon. Payday loans legislation has been making its way through numerous state legislatures and currently Federal as well, and most popular among them is an outright ban on short term loans, cash advances, or whatever you want to call them. The Tennessee bill is for an interest rate cap, capping interest at 36%, tantamount to a death sentence, and despite numerous studies demonstrating that bans do no one any good at all, lobbyists still try and advocate for the bans anyway. Lenders in Tennessee would likely want some credit repair if the state bans lending payday loans.

When you did the payday loans, you would have signed a contract, read what it says and see what the laws are. I know in Mississippi, if not paid back, can cash the check held, can sue you, get a judgement against you and garnish your wages and or bank account.

It is hard to believe that entire states are neglected because they are so firmly Red or Blue that $$ spent there is wasted. But the scale of things is so different in the US, that I am struggling to come to grips.
